Jane Ibrahim learned by the sides of some of our favorite New York designers, from the ultracool Yigal Azrouel to the chic Michael Kors, and is now striking out on her own.

Design DNA: “My fashion awakening happened with ’90s grunge, so my love of ruggedness is always there but it is now tempered with femininity. It is my goal to find new, fun ways to do things, but ultimately my clothes have to be flattering to the female form.

” Dream model: “Jacquelyn Jablonsky. She embodies the balance of masculinity and femininity this collection encompasses. Also, I would love to dress my friend Will, but he seems a little reluctant to let me do so.”

Backstory: “I’ve worked for over 10 years in New York for some great American brands like Michael Kors, Yigal Azrouel, Theory, and Cythnia Steffe.” A little over a year ago, I felt it was the right time to venture out on my own. It was a terrible time economically, but I really felt that difficult times produce unique opportunities. This collection began with the idea of pairing structured jackets with soft draped dresses that juxtapose masculinity and femininity. We named it Maisonette 1977 because we believe in the tradition of a small design house, so maisonette worked perfectly.”

Inspiration: “It starts with the fabric. I look at a lot of fabric and start imagining its uses even before developing the concept for the coming season. Eventually, the stimulation in my life began to inform a story concept that becomes married to the fabric story.”

It seems as though NO ONE can stop talking about Oprah donning a beautiful Camilla kaftan [The Short Babylon in Banshee Print] since she was spotted in it last week during her Celebratory Australian Tour. Seriously! We posted the picture of Oprah in the brilliant dress as soon as we got word around last Thursday, but since then Oprah and Camilla both have garnered international attention for the look. Check out this article in Australian newspaper The Herald Sun:

"The US talk show queen bought one of Franks' trademark kaftans to wear to a harbourside party last week and then donned a Dinnigan blouse and skirt creation for the taping of her Sydney shows on Tuesday.

Images of both outfits subsequently beamed around the world, with both Australian designers' international agents ordering more stock to meet an increase in demand.

For any fashion designer, there could be no better advertising. 'Sales sky-rocketed immediately as soon as Oprah was seen wearing it,' Dinnigan said.

'Within 24 hours, I had over 1000 emails and text messages. It's been phenomenal. It's things like this that bring tears to your eyes. It makes you feel like you are on the right path.'

Winfrey bought the $699 Babylon Banshee print kaftan, which was not originally a best-seller despite being the main piece of Camilla's summer 2010 collection.

Dinnigan's blouse retails at $450 and is available in several colours, while the skirt was created just for the chat-show queen. A limited number will now be produced with a price tag of $950.

Dinnigan is already stocked in the US. 'Everyone keeps ringing from all around the world,' Dinnigan said.

The fashion coup has given her the confidence to consider showing at New York Fashion Week next year a month after the shows go to air in the US."

Since A Peace Treaty emerged on the scene with their ecologically and socially responsible fashion-forward styles, they've been a hit among the bloggers and high-fashion columnists alike.

WHEW. We're all breathing a sigh of relief that Coterie is finally over! Thank you to all our awesome clients that braved the Javits Center--both old and new! However, now that the show is over, the real work begins. We're feverently managing our usual traffic in and out of the showroom without skipping a beat. As promised, JS blog will be releasing only the awesomest tidbits related to the show. But first, we have to talk about Camilla.

Where do we begin? Well first let's start with J'ADORE. Australian borne Camilla Franks has been dazzling wardrobes and runways ever since her first delicious kaftan was created eight years ago. With a background in theater, her arial and dreamlike pieces provide an absolute visual feast. Unlike food feasts however, we guiltlessly gorge our eyes on her bountiful use of trans-seasonal colors and majestic organic patterns; with just a tiny sprinkle of Swarovski crystals on top for those of you with a sweet tooth. Her garbs have been spotted on the A-Listers such as Fergie, Liz Hurley, and Jennifer Hawkins. Even BEYONCE was spotted in a Camilla dress, and she usually wears nothing but House of Dereon.
